The Blockie – Font Story
Several years ago I had the opportunity to design a font of my choice under the supervision of a professor. I love geometry, but I have never been much into bold, bulky fonts. Yet, I decided to do something different That’s how The Blockie was born. And I was surprised by how much I ended up liking it! Extremely big blocks, mono-type spacing, and I decided to use bright contrasty colors. Talk about bold font.
When creating a poster for it, I thought a concert poster would be fun. Think dark show with laser lights. The Blockie will be in your town rocking soon! Or you can watch Tron and think of it.
I gotta admit, I cheated a bit. Since we didn’t have a lot of time for the project, I didn’t create a whole alphabet. I only worked mostly on the letters I needed, and created a system that can be used to get any necessary letter (it was a Spring term, not a full semester, and the professor suggested we do that). We didn’t work with any software to
Even though I’ve enjoyed calligraphy and lettering, I never have thought much of designing fonts. I do have a favorite font designer, Ale Paul from Sudtipos, but his style is something completely different from what I’ve done, and I don’t know if I could ever create anything close to the elegant and smooth fonts he creates. During a conference with him, I learned about what it takes to create an actual font: uppercase, lowercase, numbers, special signs, all the details, variations, etc. Script? Add letter endings, change the letter according to what letter follows, give alternatives to uppercases, and so much more. It seems very overwhelming and it’s an adventure I am not ready to start, though I’ll continue to throughly enjoy observing others on it.
So, yes, this is not a real font. But it’s a start. And I got a little, tiny glimpse of what this could be. It also wasn’t the first time I worked on a font, I did it back when I was a sophomore as well, but I liked this one from my senior year more. I’m totally open to creating custom letters, but I don’t think I’m ready to take on a full font-family how it deserves to be created.
Have you ever created your own font? Or have you ever wanted to try it out?
